Used adverbially to mean 'even more' or 'to a greater degree.'

秋(あき)になり一段(いちだん)と寒(さむ)くなった。

It became even colder as autumn arrived.

練習(れんしゅう)して一段(いちだん)と上手(じょうず)になった。

I practiced and became even better.

新製品(しんせいひん)は一段(いちだん)と性能(せいのう)が上(あ)がった。

The new product's performance improved even more.

Usage

一段(いちだん)と means "even more, noticeably more", marking a clear step up in degree: 一段(いちだん)と寒(さむ)くなった (it got noticeably colder). It is a little more formal than もっと and is common in weather reports and news.

Watch out

The first rank in judo, kendo, go, and other arts is 初段(しょだん), not 一段(いちだん); counting starts at 二段(にだん) after it.
In grammar, 一段(いちだん)動詞(どうし) (ichidan verbs) are verbs such as 食(た)べる and 見(み)る, whose stem stays the same in every form (食(た)べ-ない, 食(た)べ-ます).
