1. to stay still; to remain motionless; to keep quiet

To hold one's body still without moving, often requiring patience or self-control.

じっとしていてね。

子(こ)どもにじっとしていろと言(い)っても無理(むり)だ。

2. to stare; to gaze fixedly

To look at something or someone steadily and intently without looking away.

彼女(かのじょ)をじっと見(み)た。

I stared at her fixedly.

猫(ねこ)が窓(まど)の外(そと)をじっと見(み)ている。

The cat is gazing fixedly out the window.

彼(かれ)は何(なに)も言(い)わず、写真(しゃしん)をじっと見(み)つめていた。

He said nothing and stared intently at the photograph.

An onomatopoeic suru-verb where じっと expresses the idea of being fixed in place or focused without movement. In sense 1, it describes physical stillness — holding one's body motionless. In sense 2, it describes visual fixation — staring without looking away. Both senses share the core idea of sustained, unbroken focus or immobility.

じっと can also function as an adverb without する: じっと待(ま)つ (to wait patiently without moving), じっと耐(た)える (to endure without flinching).
