1. exactly alike, the spitting image
Looking or being extremely similar to something or someone.
彼(かれ)は父親(ちちおや)にそっくりだ。
He looks just like his father.
この絵(え)は本物(ほんもの)そっくりだ。
This painting looks exactly like the real thing.
双子(ふたご)だから、顔(かお)がそっくりだ。
They're twins, so their faces are exactly alike.
2. entirely, completely, all
The whole thing without anything left out.
給料(きゅうりょう)をそっくり貯金(ちょきん)した。
I saved my entire salary.
財布(さいふ)の中身(なかみ)をそっくり盗(ぬす)まれた。
The entire contents of my wallet were stolen.
箱(はこ)の中身(なかみ)をそっくりそのまま別(べつ)の箱(はこ)に移(うつ)した。
I moved the entire contents of the box exactly as they were to another box.

そっくり has two main uses:

1. RESEMBLANCE (extremely similar):

  • Aは Bにそっくりだ: A looks just like B
  • 瓜(うり)二(ふた)つにそっくり: like two peas in a pod
  • そっくりさん: look-alike, doppelganger

2. ENTIRETY (all, completely):

  • そっくりそのまま: exactly as is
  • お金(かね)をそっくり使(つか)う: to spend all the money
  • そっくり持(も)っていく: to take everything

SIMILAR WORDS (for resemblance):

  • 似(に)ている: to resemble
  • うり二(ふた)つ: identical, like two peas in a pod
  • そのもの: the very thing itself
