To move past a place or point without stopping.
駅を通り過ぎた。
I went past the station.
車が通り過ぎるのを待つ。
To wait for the car to pass by.
目的地を通り過ぎたことに気づいた。
I realized I had gone past my destination.
出口を通り過ぎてしまったので、戻らなければならなかった。
I accidentally went past the exit, so I had to go back.

My friend passed right in front of me, but I didn't notice and couldn't call out to them.
通り過ぎる is a compound ichidan verb combining 通る (to pass through) + 過ぎる (to exceed/pass).
TRANSITIVITY:
Intransitive verb (自動詞). Takes を particle for the place passed.
COMMON PATTERNS:
- 駅を通り過ぎる: to go past the station
- 目の前を通り過ぎる: to pass before one's eyes

USAGE NOTE:
Often used with 〜てしまう to express accidentally going past something: 駅を通り過ぎてしまった (I accidentally missed/passed the station).
