Watch out

For machine chains the everyday word is チェーン: 自転車(じてんしゃ)のチェーン (bicycle chain), タイヤチェーン (snow chains). チェーン is also the word for a chain of shops; 鎖(くさり) is never used that way.

Usage

Figurative: 因習(いんしゅう)の鎖(くさり) (the chains of convention), 束縛(そくばく)の鎖(くさり)を断(た)つ (to break one's bonds).
