では

では is a conjunction used to transition to a new topic, action, or to signal departure. It's a shortened form of それでは.

FORMALITY LEVELS:

• それでは: full form (formal)
• では: standard polite
• じゃあ/じゃ: casual

COMMON USES:

1. Starting something:

• では、始(はじ)めましょう: Well then, let's begin
• では、次(つぎ)に進(すす)みましょう: Now, let's move on

2. Leaving/saying goodbye:

• では、また: Well, see you
• では、失礼(しつれい)します: Well, excuse me (formal goodbye)
• では、お先(さき)に: Well, I'll go ahead (leaving before others)

3. Transitioning in conversation:

• では、質問(しつもん)はありますか: So, are there any questions?
• では、次(つぎ)の話題(わだい)に: Now, onto the next topic

NOTE:
Do not confuse with the particle combination では (で + は) meaning "in/at" with contrast: 日本(にほん)では (in Japan, [as opposed to elsewhere]).
