1.
rent
The amount of money paid regularly for the use of a house, apartment, or other residence.
Rent goes up when you're close to the station, so I chose a place a little farther away.
Usage: 家賃 is the everyday word for residential rent — what a tenant pays a 大家 each month for a house or apartment. In contracts, and for office or commercial space, the more formal 賃料 or テナント料 is used instead.
Common patterns
- 家賃を払う (to pay rent)
- 家賃が高い/安い (rent is expensive/cheap)
- 家賃を滞納する (to be behind on rent)
- 家賃込み (rent included, e.g. in a quoted total)
Related costs: when you sign a lease you normally also pay 敷金 (a refundable security deposit) and 礼金 (non-refundable key money) on top of the first month's 家賃.
