For something (especially a deadline, danger, etc.) to come close.
()()りが(せま)っている。
The deadline is approaching.
危険(きけん)(せま)ってきた。
Danger is drawing near.
試験(しけん)()(せま)ってきた。
The exam day is approaching.
2. to press, to urge, to demand
To strongly demand or pressure someone.
(かれ)回答(かいとう)(せま)った。
I pressed him for an answer.
辞任(じにん)(せま)られた。
I was pressed to resign.
記者(きしゃ)政治家(せいじか)説明(せつめい)(せま)った。
The reporter pressed the politician for an explanation.
3. to be pressing, to be imminent
For a situation to become urgent.
決断(けつだん)(とき)(せま)っている。
The time for a decision is pressing.
状況(じょうきょう)(せま)っていて、のんびりしていられない。
The situation is pressing, and we can't take it easy.
(せま)った状況(じょうきょう)(なか)冷静(れいせい)判断(はんだん)しなければならない。
We must make calm judgments in a pressing situation.

(せま)る means to approach (usually something threatening or urgent) or to press/demand.
