used with negative verbs to express strong denial or prohibition

FORMATION:
絶対(ぜったい) (absolute) + に (adverbializer)

USAGE PATTERNS:

  • 絶対(ぜったい)に + affirmative → definitely, certainly
  • 絶対(ぜったい)に + negative → never, absolutely not

INTENSITY:
One of the strongest emphatic adverbs in Japanese. Using it conveys very strong determination or prohibition.

CAUTION:
Overuse can sound dramatic or immature. In formal contexts, 必(かなら)ず (certainly) may be more appropriate for affirmative sentences.

COLLOCATIONS:

  • 絶対(ぜったい)に無理(むり) (absolutely impossible)
  • 絶対(ぜったい)に嫌(いや) (absolutely refuse)
