USAGE:
The gaming/computing sense (sense 1) is extremely common in everyday Japanese. セーブする means "to save" data or game progress. The opposite is ロードする (to load).

The sports sense (sense 2) is used mainly in baseball and soccer. In baseball, it refers to the official statistic for a relief pitcher who preserves a lead.

Note that セーブ is NOT used for "saving money" (that is 節約(せつやく)する or 貯金(ちょきん)する) or "saving someone" (that is (たす)ける or (すく)う).

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • セーブする: to save (data/game)
  • セーブデータ: save data, save file
  • セーブポイント: save point
  • オートセーブ: auto-save
