1. to borrow

To receive something temporarily with the intention of returning it.

May I borrow a book?

I borrowed a book from the library.

で marks where you borrow from

I borrowed money from a friend.

May I borrow an umbrella?

I borrowed a dictionary and looked it up.

I borrowed a book from my teacher and read it in one week.

2. to rent

To pay to use something temporarily, like an apartment or car.

アパートを借(か)りています。

I'm renting an apartment.

I'd like to rent a car.

I rented a room near the station.

I rented a bicycle for the trip.

I'm renting an apartment near my company, so my commute is easy.

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xに/からYを借(か)りる (borrow Y from X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing state. 借(か)りている = 'have borrowed (still have it)' or 'am renting.'

COMMON PATTERNS:

Opposite: 貸(か)す (to lend).
