1. to borrow
To receive something temporarily with the intention of returning it.
May I borrow a book?
I borrowed a book from the library.

2. to rent
To pay to use something temporarily, like an apartment or car.
アパート()りています。
I'm renting an apartment.

I rented a room near the station.

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xに/からYを()りる (borrow Y from X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing state. ()りている = 'have borrowed (still have it)' or 'am renting.'

COMMON PATTERNS:
