1. rattling; clattering

The sound of something rattling or shaking noisily.

がたがた is an onomatopoeic word expressing rattling sounds, unstable conditions, or persistent complaining.

Register

The sound and poor-condition senses are neutral and usable in ordinary conversation and writing. The complaining sense (sense 3) is distinctly informal and often blunt or scolding — がたがた言(い)うな is something a superior says to a subordinate, not the reverse.
