noun
beef (or pork) and egg rice bowl
1. beef (or pork) and egg rice bowl
A rice bowl dish topped with sliced beef or pork simmered with onions in a sweet soy-based broth, then bound with beaten egg. Named in contrast to 親子丼(おやこどん), which uses chicken and egg.

他人丼(たにんどん)親子丼(おやこどん)()ているが、(にく)(ちが)う。
Tanindon is similar to oyakodon, but the meat is different.
関西(かんさい)では牛肉(ぎゅうにく)他人丼(たにんどん)定番(ていばん)メニューだ。
In the Kansai region, beef tanindon is a standard menu item.

The name is a playful contrast with 親子丼(おやこどん) (parent-and-child bowl). In 親子丼(おやこどん), the chicken ((おや), parent) and egg ((), child) are related, so they are "parent and child." In 他人丼(たにんどん), the meat (beef or pork) and egg are from different animals, so they are "他人(たにん)" (strangers/unrelated people).

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • 他人丼(たにんどん)(つく)る: to make a tanindon

REGIONAL NOTE:
他人丼(たにんどん) is more commonly known in the Kansai region. In Kanto, it is sometimes called 開化丼(かいかどん) (civilization bowl), a name dating back to the Meiji era when eating beef became popular.
