The home a politician, executive, or other public figure owns personally, as opposed to the official residence provided with the post. Used mainly in news reporting.
The prime minister returned to his private residence.
Reporters were waiting in front of the private residence.
It was announced that he had decided to commute from his private residence rather than the official one.

() (private) + (てい) (mansion, residence). Almost always used in contrast with 公邸(こうてい), the official residence that comes with a government post.
