To send something through the air with a casual motion.
ボールを放(ほう)った。

放(ほう)る is a transitive verb (他動詞(たどうし)).

ASPECT (ている):
The ている form can indicate ongoing neglect (子供(こども)を放(ほう)っている = 'is neglecting the child').

Common patterns

The compound 放(ほう)っておく is extremely common in spoken Japanese for 'leave alone' or 'let it be.' The more emphatic 放(ほう)り出(だ)す means to abandon something abruptly.
