1.
to throw; to toss; to fling
To send something through the air with a casual motion.
ボールを放った。
I tossed the ball.
石を川に放った。
I threw a stone into the river.
荷物をベッドの上に放った。

To leave something without care or attention.
仕事を放って遊びに行った。
I abandoned my work and went to have fun.
その問題は放っておけない。
I can't just leave that problem alone.
[Note: 放っておく = leave alone]
散らかった部屋を放っておけない。
I can't just leave the messy room as it is.
子供を一人で放っておくのは心配だ。
I'm worried about leaving the child alone.
風邪を放っておいたら悪化した。

放る is a transitive verb (他動詞).
ASPECT ({ている}):
The ている form can indicate ongoing neglect (子供を放っている = 'is neglecting the child').
