ボールを遠くに放ったら、窓ガラスに当たってしまった。
I threw the ball far and it ended up hitting a window.

To leave something without care or attention.
仕事を放って遊びに行った。
I abandoned my work and went to have fun.
その問題は放っておけない。
I can't just leave that problem alone.
[Note: 放っておく = leave alone]
散らかった部屋を放っておけない。
I can't just leave the messy room as it is.
子供を一人で放っておくのは心配だ。
I'm worried about leaving the child alone.
風邪を放っておいたら悪化した。
I left my cold untreated and it got worse.
放る is a transitive verb (他動詞).
ASPECT ({ている}):
The ている form can indicate ongoing neglect (子供を放っている = 'is neglecting the child').

The compound 放っておく is extremely common in spoken Japanese for 'leave alone' or 'let it be.' The more emphatic 放り出す means to abandon something abruptly.
