COMPOSITION: 不 (not, un-) + 具合 (condition, state). Literally "bad condition."
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 不具合が発生する (a malfunction occurs)
- 不具合が見つかる (a defect is found)
- 不具合を修正する (to fix a bug)
- 不具合を報告する (to report a problem)
- 不具合対応 (defect handling)
- システムの不具合 (system malfunction)
USAGE NOTE: 不具合 is often preferred in business and customer communication because it sounds less severe than 故障 (breakdown), 欠陥 (defect), or 不良 (defective). This is sometimes called euphemistic corporate language.
