熱(ねつ) (heat) + 中(ちゅう) (being struck by, as in 中毒(ちゅうどく)) + 症(しょう) (illness, condition) → illness from being struck by heat

The word is not built on 熱中(ねっちゅう)する (to be absorbed in); the shared spelling is a coincidence of the two kanji.
