十日(とおか)

十日(とおか) uses native Japanese counting and has two meanings: the 10th day of the month, and a duration of ten days.

DAYS OF THE MONTH (1-10):

The first ten days use special native Japanese readings:

• 一日(ついたち) (1st)
• 二日(ふつか) (2nd)
• 三日(みっか) (3rd)
• 四日(よっか) (4th)
• 五日(いつか) (5th)
• 六日(むいか) (6th)
• 七日(なのか) (7th)
• 八日(ようか) (8th)
• 九日(ここのか) (9th)
• 十日(とおか) (10th)

After the 10th, most days use Sino-Japanese numbers + 日(にち) (e.g., 十一日(じゅういちにち)).

DURATION USAGE:

• 十日(とおか)間(かん): a ten-day period
• 十日(とおか)ぶりに: for the first time in ten days
• 十日(とおか)ほどかかる: it takes about ten days
