The act of striking one's palms together to show appreciation or approval.
観客から大きな拍手が起こった。
There was loud applause from the audience.
拍手が起こる = applause breaks out
演奏が終わると、拍手が鳴り止まなかった。

割れんばかりの拍手 = deafening applause
USAGE: 拍手 is used for clapping as a sign of appreciation. Note that clapping at shrines (拍手) uses a different reading.
