お願いする is the polite way to make a request. It is the humble form of 頼む (to ask/request) and is essential for daily polite communication.
Common expressions
- お願いします: Please / I'd like to request this (extremely common)
- よろしくお願いします: Please take care of this / Nice to meet you / I look forward to working with you
- お願いがあるのですが: I have a favor to ask

USAGE (sense 2, prayer):
At shrines and temples, お願いする means to pray for something or make a wish: 神様にお願いする (to pray to God/the gods).
Register
お願いする is polite and appropriate in most situations. For casual requests, use 頼む instead. For very formal written requests, 依頼する is used.
