(しよう)

しよう
noun
(no) way, means (with negative); specifications
See also: 使用(しよう) (use, usage)
1. (no) way, method, means (with negative)
A way or method of doing something. In modern Japanese this sense survives almost only in negative expressions: 仕様(しよう)がない (it can't be helped) and …の仕様(しよう)がない (there is no way to do …).
There's nothing we can do about it, so let's give up.
[Note: 仕様(しよう)がない is a common expression meaning 'can't be helped']
There was no other way, so I walked home.
Asked out of the blue, I had no way to reply.
2. specifications
Detailed description of requirements, dimensions, or features (technical).
Please check the specifications of this product.
We'll proceed with development according to the specifications document.
It takes time to change the specifications.

仕様(しよう) has two main uses:

1. WAY/METHOD (only with negatives):

  • 仕様(しよう)ない: it can't be helped, there's no way — often contracted to しょうがない in speech
  • 返事(へんじ)仕様(しよう)がない: there is no way to reply (…の仕様(しよう)がない = no way to do …)
  • どうしようもない: there's nothing to be done (related expression)
  • After a verb stem, 〜ようがない (e.g. (なお)ようがない: there's no way to fix it) uses the suffix よう (様), not 仕様(しよう).

2. SPECIFICATIONS (technical):

NOTE: This is a homophone with 私用(しよう) (personal use) and 使用(しよう) (use).
