1. to fly
Describes movement through the air, as done by birds, planes, insects, etc.
鳥(とり)が空(そら)を飛(と)んでいます。
A bird is flying in the sky.
飛行機(ひこうき)が飛(と)びました。
The airplane took off.
あの鳥(とり)は高(たか)く飛(と)びます。
That bird flies high.
空(そら)を飛(と)べたらいいな。鳥(とり)になりたいです。
I wish I could fly. I want to become a bird.
この飛行機(ひこうき)は東京(とうきょう)から大阪(おおさか)まで飛(と)びます。一(いち)時間(じかん)ぐらいかかります。
This airplane flies from Tokyo to Osaka. It takes about one hour.
2. to jump, to leap
Describes leaping into the air or jumping over something.
猫(ねこ)が飛(と)んだ。
The cat jumped.
子供(こども)が飛(と)んでいます。
The child is jumping.
犬(いぬ)が川(かわ)を飛(と)びました。
The dog jumped over the river.
子供(こども)たちが楽(たの)しそうに飛(と)んでいます。
The children are jumping around happily.
猫(ねこ)がテーブルから飛(と)んで、窓(まど)の方(ほう)に行(い)きました。外(そと)を見(み)たかったようです。
The cat jumped from the table and went toward the window. It seemed to want to look outside.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xが飛(と)ぶ (X flies/jumps).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. 飛(と)んでいる = 'is flying' (progressive).

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • 空(そら)を飛(と)ぶ (fly through the sky)
  • 鳥(とり)が飛(と)ぶ (a bird flies)
  • 飛(と)び上(あ)がる (jump up)
