to let escape; to set free
To allow someone or something to get away.
魚を逃した。
I let the fish get away.
犯人を逃してしまった。
We let the criminal escape.
捕まえた鳥を逃してしまった。
I accidentally let the bird I caught escape.
子供が手を離したので、犬を逃してしまった。
The child let go of the leash, so we let the dog get away.
警察は長い間追いかけていた犯人をまた逃してしまった。
The police let the criminal they had been chasing for a long time escape again.

to miss; to let slip
To fail to take advantage of an opportunity or chance.
このチャンスを逃したくない。
I don't want to miss this chance.
電車を逃して遅刻した。
I missed the train and was late.
せっかくの機会を逃してしまった。
I let a great opportunity slip away.
安く買えるチャンスを逃して、とても残念だった。
I missed the chance to buy it cheaply and was very disappointed.
最後のバスを逃してしまったので、歩いて家まで帰らなければならなかった。
I missed the last bus, so I had to walk home.
逃す is a transitive verb (他動詞). The intransitive pair is 逃れる (to escape).
ASPECT ({ている}):
逃している is rarely used; the past tense 逃した (missed/let escape) is more common.

逃す VS 逃がす:
