Watch out

English 'smart' means clever; Japanese スマート means slim or sleek. To call someone intelligent, use 頭(あたま)がいい or 賢(かしこ)い. The 'clever device' sense appears only in borrowed compounds: スマートフォン (スマホ), スマート家電(かでん), スマートシティ.
