Usage

The verb form 味方(みかた)する marks the person being supported with に, not を: 弟(おとうと)に味方(みかた)する (to side with one's younger brother). The noun pattern 弟(おとうと)の味方(みかた)をする means the same thing and is at least as common in speech.

を appears with 味方(みかた) in the set phrase 味方(みかた)につける (to win someone over to your side), where を marks the person being recruited: 世論(よろん)を味方(みかた)につける (to get public opinion on your side).
