駅(えき)で友達(ともだち)と別(わか)れた。

It was lonely parting with my family at the airport.

2. to break up, to divorce
To end a romantic relationship or marriage.
彼女(かのじょ)と別(わか)れました。
I broke up with her.

For a road or path to split into separate directions.
道(みち)がここで二(ふた)つに別(わか)れる。
The road splits into two here.
川(かわ)が山(やま)の近(ちか)くで別(わか)れている。
The river branches near the mountain.
この先(さき)で道(みち)が三(みっ)つに別(わか)れるので、右(みぎ)に行(い)ってください。
The road splits into three up ahead, so please go right.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pattern: Xと別(わか)れる (part from X) / Xが別(わか)れる (X splits).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 別(わか)れている = 'is separated' or 'has parted.'
